As a Supervisory Nuclear Engineer, you will:
Direct the Office of NRD organizational activities, frames strategic plans based on broad organizational assessments and evaluations of long-term organizational objectives. Support the development of the regulatory basis for next generation reactor concepts that provide safe, secure and enhanced nuclear energy to U.S. and international markets. Monitoring of domestic nuclear power plant fleet status and issues/factors affecting operating nuclear power plants in the U.S. and the world, including electric utilities, the nuclear industry, industry organizations (e.g., NEI, INPO, EPRI and US NIC) and potential users of nuclear processed heat, to address issues related to the construction, operation, and maintenance of commercial nuclear power plants Understanding and/or implementing staffing and personnel authorities required to recruit technical experts necessary to ensure nuclear energy research program success. Maintain liaison with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on matters related to existing operating plants advanced reactor concepts and technologies to execute a successful and relevant nuclear technology R&D programs including the application of nuclear energy to non-electric industrial applications; cooperate with NRC, industry, & international partners in addressing regulatory issues; and coordinate with NRC to assure timely development regulatory framework and licensing strategies. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSGS-15:
To qualify you must have a least 1 full year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-14 level in the Federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully in this position. This experience may have been gained in a non-Federal service position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
Evaluating complex project proposals to commercialize advanced reactor concepts, including full range of coolants and thermal sizes, large and small light water reactors (LWR) to develop, license and apply advanced reactor concepts that provide safe, secure and enhanced nuclear energy. Establish and manage collaborative nuclear energy R&D and activities with industry for advanced reactor concepts and innovative technologies, based on priorities that reflect technical, licensing and business assessments. Determining financial and/or personnel resources and/or organizational improvements needed to achieve mission objectives. Developing new/revised nuclear industry standards in coordination with industry, NRC, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and/or standards developing organizations (SDOs) to expedite development and licensing of advanced reactor concepts Your application and resume should demonstrate that you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs). DO NOT write see resume in your application! Mastery knowledge of and skill in conducting and managing research and development activities specific to advanced nuclear reactors. Such activities could include knowledge/experience in high temperature materials, instrumentation and control, design of systems and components, and the ability to apply those activities to ensure the timely and successful execution of nuclear energy programs/projects. Knowledge of the nuclear industry to extend the existing parameters of state-of the art concepts in the design, construction, operations, management, economics and policies impacting future nuclear power plants. In-depth and detailed knowledge of domestic and international policy, laws and regulations, e.g., NRC requirements, to address regulatory, technical and institutional issues concerning the safe and environmentally sound research and development, construction and operation of advanced reactor and fuel processing facilities. Ability to communicate effectively and provide expert advisory services with senior officials within the agency, other agencies, Congress, private sector nuclear energy organizations, academic institutions, senior advisory panels, and other domestic and international stakeholders. Ability to provide executive leadership and direction necessary for the execution of short- and long-range planning, development, and execution of NE technology development programs. Ability to effectively establish and maintain close and mutually beneficial contacts with senior staff in DOE, other Federal agencies, Congress, domestic industries and laboratories, universities, and heads of national and international nuclear energy organizations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include:
volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
